An Introduction
The last 5 years working in IT (both as a career and a freelancer) have been equal parts rewarding and eye opening. I've greatly expanded my skillset, and come across many wild, and oftentimes headache inducing situations along the way.
It's also been extremely rewarding. I started with my current employer in September of 2023, around 16 months ago. In that relatively short period I have progressed from 1st Line support to a senior member of staff.
My official title now is 2nd Line Technical Specialist, but I like to think of it more as a Systems Administrator. Still, that doesnt really fit what i actually do. As is often the case in IT, I wear so many hats that it's hard to define what my job is concisely. It involves technical support, project management, testing, and server admin. My job is basically to keep the company's infrastructure running and resolve any complex issues that clients have.
I also run my own freelance Web development business which has seen pretty good success over the past 5 years, but has also convinced me that I am not the business 'type'. Building websites, configuring servers, and working on technical solutions to fix an issue is exciting... filling paperwork and tax returns is not!
In this blog I'll be sharing some of my experiences (good and bad) of working in IT, as well as tips, tricks, and handy dandy scripts to make life a little easier. I'm hoping that some it will be useful, or at least make for interesting reading.
